Obsession (2025) is a psychological horror thriller that weaves together romance, suspense, and supernatural elements into a disturbing but compelling cinematic experience. Curry Barker’s film takes the familiar “be careful what you wish for” idea and turns it into a chilling story of love, desire and the dangerous consequences of obsession.
Plot .
Bear, a shy music store employee, has loved his childhood friend and co-worker Nikki secretly for years. The Bear is at a loss for words to describe his feelings. But he discovers a mysterious object called the “One Wish Willow” that can fulfil one wish. In desperation, he uses it to win Nikki’s heart and hopes she’ll fall completely in love with him.
At first, everything appears perfect. Suddenly Nikki is loving, caring and completely devoted to Bear. But what begins as a dream soon becomes a nightmare. Her love turns into an unhealthy obsession and leads to disturbing behaviour, terrifying visions and increasingly dangerous situations. But as he sees the terrible consequences of his wish, Bear must find a way to end the curse before it destroys both their lives.
Cast & Acting
Michael Johnston is convincing as Bear, embodying the character’s loneliness and desperation and later fear in a believable way. His emotional arc is identifiable, so that viewers sympathise with his errors even when his choices lead to disaster.
Inde Navarrette’s performance as Nikki is the standout. She glides effortlessly from a good-natured and amiable co-worker to a deeply disquieting figure and her fixation becomes the film’s most potent source of tension. Her performance brings emotional weight and real horror to the story.
Supporting players like Cooper Tomlinson and Megan Lawless also do a good job, helping to create the film’s mood and emotional density.
Direction & Technicalities
Curry Barker’s direction is one of the strongest things about the film. It ratchets up the tension with creepy visuals, smart sound design, and a general sense that something is very very wrong. It goes beyond jump scares and instead uses psychological horror to make the audience uncomfortable in the best way possible.
The camerawork captures both the romantic and horrific sides of the story, and the haunting soundtrack adds to the suspense throughout the film.
Decision
Obsession (2025) is not just a horror movie – it’s a dark look at love, loneliness and the perils of trying to control another’s feelings. A memorable watch for fans of thrillers and horror with strong performances, an intriguing premise and effective psychological horror.
