US-Iran Conflict: Is a larger global war possible?

Strait of Hormuz becomes a key battleground in the rising US-Iran Tensions

The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Iran, and Israel has once again pushed the Middle East to the center of global attention. Recent military confrontations, strikes, retaliatory attacks, and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have heightened fears of a broader regional war. Reports emerging this week indicate renewed military incidents involving U.S. forces and Iranian-backed responses, keeping the international community on high alert.

The United States and Israel have continued military operations aimed at limiting Iran’s strategic and military capabilities. On the other hand, Iran has responded through direct and indirect military actions, increasing tensions across the Middle East. Global energy markets have already seen a significant increase in the oil prices because of disruptions in Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important routes in terms of oil transport to major countries in Asia and South East Asia.

A lasting ceasefire is uncertain due to repeated military exchanges, although diplomatic efforts have been made.

One of the biggest concerns among global leaders is the possibility of nuclear escalation. While no nuclear weapons have been used and there is currently no verified indication that nuclear use is imminent, the conflict revolves partly around concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and regional security dynamics.

Could a Nuclear War Between the US and Iran Actually Happen?

The United States possesses one of the world’s largest nuclear weapon capabilities, while Iran does not officially possess nuclear weapons. However, the international community has been concerned over Iran’s nuclear weapon development. Recent military actions and diplomatic breakdowns have further complicated efforts to control nuclear escalation. If it escalates, the United States is in a state where it would immediately use nuclear weapons. Considering that, Iran could get convinced that acquiring nuclear weapons is the only solution for its survival. Experts have warned that military strikes can strengthen a country’s determination to pursue nuclear capabilities as a safeguard against future attacks.

If strategic waterways and global trade routes remain blocked for extended periods, there is a very high likelihood that the conflict expands beyond the Middle East. Major powers such as the United States, Russia, or China can become directly involved militarily. While the possibility of a third world war cannot be completely ruled out, most governments continue to prioritize diplomacy and regional containment over global confrontation.

Rising Oil Prices and Inflation

Rising crude oil prices may result in higher transportation and logistics costs resulting in increased inflation worldwide. Stocks markets would become increasingly volatile leading to reduced global trade growth. For countries like India, the biggest concern remains energy security because a significant portion of crude oil imports originates from the Gulf region. Any disruption in supply chains could directly affect fuel prices and household expenses.

The coming weeks will be instrumental in determining whether the region moves toward de-escalation or enters a more dangerous phase with broader international involvement.
